Cobalt Blue, for alto saxophone and piano

Commissioned by David Dees for the 14th World Saxophone Congress 2006, Ljubljana, Slovenia.  The language uses quintal harmonies with numerous variations.  In many ways it is freely rhapsodic, although it has an overall design of ABA.  A cadenza introduction leads to several ideas within each of the formal sections.  The “blue” designation is an indication of blues-like structures and hints of jazz flavors along with an altered “blues” formal design in the B section.  Cobalt blue is one of the most intense forms of blue in the artistic palette, and refers to the wildness and intensity asked for by Mr. Dees in the commissioning of the work.
